You'll see the phrase "skin barrier" everywhere in skincare right now — but what is it, really?
What the barrier is
Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin. One of its main jobs is to help hold moisture in and keep irritants out. It's often described like a brick wall, with skin cells as the bricks and lipids as the mortar.
Why it matters
When the barrier is supported, skin tends to feel soft, calm, and comfortable. When it's disrupted — by over-cleansing, harsh actives, or environmental stress — skin can feel dry, tight, or reactive.
How to support it
Gentle is the theme: a soft cleanser, hydrating ingredients, and a comforting moisturiser go a long way. Avoid over-exfoliating, and give your skin time. Explore our Barrier Support collection to learn more.
